In The Beginning
On Thursday March 1 1962, Yewande Memorial School (YMS) opened doors to its first class of 5 pupils (all girls) at 3, Ayinde Giwa Street, Surulere, Lagos. They were: Desola Dabiri, Yemi Delano, Bukola Erinle, Toju Nana and Bukola Omideyi.
YMS was one of the first indigenously owned private primary schools in Lagos State. It was established by Reverend (Mrs.) Victoria Arinola Ajayi in memory of her mother – Mercy Yewande Kolawole – who died on May 6 1946 – 2 months to the Founder’s 16th Birthday. Pink – the favourite colour of Mercy Yewande Kolawole – is the school’s primary colour. The complementary colour is blue. The purposeful mission of Reverend Mrs Ajayi was to provide affordable qualitative education built on strong moral and scriptural principles for young minds to overcome life challenges in an ethical manner.
Motto: Walk As Children Of Light.
